Otis — a small stuffed gnome with a pointed hat and a worked-in nose.

What you get

  • A 5-page PDF, A4 and US Letter both included
  • 17 numbered rounds, each ending in the stitch count you should have
  • A stitch chart drawn from the same counts as the written pattern
  • 3 things that commonly go wrong, and what to do about each

Before you start

  • Skill level: Confident beginner
  • Finished size: about 8 cm (3.3 in) tall
  • Time to make: about 25 minutes to 45 minutes
  • Assembly: Worked in one piece with the hanging loop made first. No pieces are sewn together.
  • Terms: US crochet terms throughout.

You must already know: chain, single crochet, increase, sc2tog, working in continuous rounds, using a stitch marker. This pattern does not teach you to crochet — it teaches you to make this one object.

You will need: stitch marker, toy stuffing, yarn needle, scissors, scrap of tan yarn for the nose. Yarn: Cream body, red or green hat DK or worsted (CYC 3–4).

Two things this file does not state. Yarn amount and hook size are left blank on purpose — neither can be worked out from a stitch count, and no physical make has been recorded to measure them from. Size and time above are calculated from the counts, not measured. Every count was worked out twice, independently, and matched before the file was allowed to exist.
